Today is the 35th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. I thought it would be honourable to write a tribute to John Lennon who died on December 8, 1980.This day has been memorable for many.

John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England during World War II. His father’s name was Alfred Lennon and his mother’s name was Julia. His father Alfred was a merchant seaman who did not see his son born and also not being able to see his child a lot since he was away at sea. John came from a dysfunctional family.

When he was very young Lennon’s parents separated, leading him to a very difficult choice to live with his mother or father. He was distorted because he was unable to live with his mother. It affected his life. He ended up living with his Aunt Mimi because he was not allowed to live with his mother. His mother’s family felt that his aunt had more discipline. Lennon’s mother, Julia, remarried and visited him and Mimi regularly. His mother taught Lennon how to play the banjo and the piano. His mother bought his first guitar and she had a big influence in his musical career.

As a child, John Lennon enjoyed getting in trouble. As a boy and young adult, he enjoyed drawing. Lennon’s schoolmaster thought that he could go to an art school for college, since he did not get good grades in school, but had artistic talent.

Elvis Presley’s rock music scene inspired John Lennon who was only 16-years-old to create the band called the Quarry Men, named after his school. Lennon met Paul McCartney on July 6, 1957. It was such an important day in the history of music. He soon invited McCartney to join the group, and the two eventually formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in musical history. Also, in 1957 he lost his mother. Her death was one of the most traumatic events in his life. Lennon was devastated when a car driven by an off-duty police officer in July 1958 struck Julia.

The Beatles became a worldwide hit. Everyone knows the name the Beatles. Everyone has heard their songs one way or another. He wrote and composed many of their songs.

At an art exhibition he would meet his soon to be wife Yoko Ono, whom he later married in the year 1969.

Eventually John Lennon decided (unofficially) to leave the Beatles on September 20, 1969. During the late 60s and 70s he was an activist. He did one of his most famous songs Imagine, which is a very memorable song for many out there. In 1980, John Lennon returned to the music world with the album Double Fantasy, featuring the hit single “(Just Like) Starting Over.” Tragically, just a few weeks after the album’s release, Lennon was shot several times by a deranged fan in front of his apartment complex in New York City. Lennon died at New York City’s Roosevelt Hospital on December 8, 1980, at the age of 40.

Let us not forget about John Lennon and the influence he had on society and music.
